I want to find or create genealogy
tools that will make the genealogy webpage generation easier. At
the moment I am using Family Tree Maker 10.0, it does a decent job for
entering in the data, but the family maps can be pretty horrible.
One tool that would be useful would be the automatic generation of
family tree maps. This can be done using XSL style sheets; the
family data can be represented either in an XML data file or a mySQL
database.
My intuition says that it will be a good idea to use the same file
formats that other people are using; it looks like the GEDCOM format is
the most common. FTM 10.0 has a GEDCOM 5.5 export.
GEDCOM XML is the latest version, and will be most suitable for my
purposes. A conversion tool is available
at the GeniML site.
Should I write a converter between the GEDCOM 5.5 and XML
formats? I don't want to reinvent the wheel, but it would be good
experience. Maybe I will get the conversion done first,
work on the XSL map generation, and then go back to creating a
converter.
