Letter from Abraham Rubinshtein to Sima Flaksman Lewak, 6-1-1962

Haifa 1.6.19621

Shalom Sima and children,

I am at home today; I took two days off. Today is the first day of June and I guess that you all are very busy with Natan's wedding. Though it is a son's wedding not a daughter's. As is the custom among eastern Jews when all responsibility fell on the bride's side2 . I guess that in America it is the same. In spite of some perfection and improvement in your place and as well as in ours, it is so. There is a possibility to rent hall for a wedding with all kind of refreshments for a certain number of people, in a meantime there is enough things left to do for the relatives 3, especially for you who has to travel such a distance 4 for your son's wedding.

We haven't get yet an announcement of the exact date of the wedding, although that it is for sure that we (missing part of page) _____ the Chupe5.

Because we did not want to be late for the Chupe we have already sent our modest present, a wine goblet with a silver saucer, and we hope that our memento from Israel will arrive in time.

In our previous letter I have asked you, Zvi to invite my aunt Klara Simon, my mother's z"l sister to Natan's wedding, so she will be the first representative of the branch that is quite big in America. But I don't correspond with them. Although some of them I have met in person when I was young. It was Abraham Berzovski's z"l tribe; you don't know how all are related. I am trying to create a diagram that will help you to see a picture of relationship. I was trying to make that diagram during a visit of Judith and Chaim Hofman from Chicago.

I don't know either the diagram is correct according to the age of siblings because I gathered it all only a year ago. That is all I could manage.

I hope that you are well and in good health and that the wedding will take place on the chosen day, and we shall join you in your happiness from far away. And I wrote to my aunt Klara about the wedding. My best wishes to you from me, my sisters, from Doba and her family.

Abraham.

Natan's wedding day comes closer; my warm wishes to you. Much naches6 to them, happiness and all the best to the young couple. I am wondering how come that we did not get yet an invitation to the wedding. Did you send it? Write, shalom and all the best, Dvora

Translator's comments:
1 1st of June 1962.
2 According to custom of eastern Jews all responsibilities are on the bride's side.
3 Their parents.
4 I assume that there is a word since I see only "__chak" which might be the Hebrew word "merchak", which means distance.
5 Wedding ceremony.
6 Satisfaction.
